[bæk], Sir George, britischer Seeoffizier und Nordpolarforscher, * Stockport 6. 11. 1796, ✝ London 23. 6. 1878; begleitete 1819-22 und 1825-27 Sir J. Franklin auf dessen Entdeckungsreisen. Auf einer eigenen Expedition durch Nordkanada (1833-35) entdeckte, befuhr und kartierte er (bis zur Mündung) den Großen Fischfluss, den die Royal Geographical Society später nach ihm benannte (Back River). 1836-37 missglückte seine Schiffsexpedition zur Nordküste Nordamerikas.
